Riverbanks Zoo & Gardens
Animal lovers and nature lovers alike will love all the activities and attractions available at the Riverbanks Zoo & Gardens. The Australian Animals habitat features koala bears and other animals that are native to Australia, while the Riverbanks Farm lets you get up close with farm animals like cow, owls and goats. After touring one of these habitats or the seven other habitats in the zoo, stop by the botanical gardens to see native plants from across the state.
Congaree National Park
If the Riverbanks Zoo & Gardens doesn't let you get as close to nature as you would like, there is always the Congaree National Park. This national park offers two different types of campsites that you can reserve in advance. Some sites are more conventional and let you camp right by the water, but there are also backcountry campsites available for those who want to go deeper into the wilderness. Instead of spending the night or weekend in the park, you might stop by for just the day. The park lets those with a permit hunt and fish, but you don't need a permit to hike along the trails, swim in the water or rent a boat to take onto the lake.
Williams Brice Stadium
A trip to the Williams Brice Stadium just might turn you into a Gamecocks fan. The Gamecocks as the home team of the University of South Carolina. George Rogers, who won a Heisman trophy, is just one of the famous players who once raced across this field. Football games take place regularly during the season, but the stadium is open the rest of the year too. You can take a private tour of the stadium, buy tickets to an upcoming concert or other special event or just let us drive you by the stadium to see it in person.
EdVenture Children's Museum
Studies found that children learn better when they use hands on education methods. If you bring along one or more children on your South Carolina trip, put the EdVenture Children's Museum on your list. This interactive museum makes learning more fun for kids of all ages. This museum has the world's largest replica of a young boy standing right inside the front door and an exhibit that teaches kids how to care for their pets at home. Exhibits also let kids learn more about dinosaurs, cooking and nature.
Kroger Center for the Arts
The performing arts center in the city now uses the name Kroger since the retailer is the corporate sponsor of that center. The Koger Center for the Arts is a large exhibition space that showcases major plays and performing arts shows every week. It welcomes artists like The Blue Man Group and major performers, but it's also the home of the philharmonic orchestra. Even the USC Symphony performs here regularly. Always make sure that you look over the schedule to see what shows you might see on your trip.
Frankie's Fun Park
While Frankie's Fun Park has several locations around the state, one of its largest is in this South Carolina capital city. Think of this attraction as a combination of an amusement park and a state fair. It boasts rides like a roller coaster simulator and a drop zone, but it also has a miniature golf course and a go-kart track. Batting cages and laser tag are also available. Frankie's also has its own restaurant inside its main building and a large arcade filled with some of the top video games around. You can buy tickets for each individual ride and attraction or purchase a book of tickets to do it all.
Columbia is the type of city that appeals to kids and those who feel like kids at heart. You'll find fun attractions for every member of your group, including parks and centers for the performing arts.
